BookReader has the following features:

  • Coexists with IBM BookManager®. Book files residing in AS/400 folders can be used concurrently by AS/400 BookReaderTM and PC BookManager® users.
  • Work with Books display. A Work with Books display shows all of the books in a folder, allowing a user to select the books to display or register.
  • Flexible book scrolling. Commands are available to scroll one page forward or backward, one line forward or backward, to the next or previous topic in the book, and to the left and right on the page.
  • Hypertext link support. To display the text connected to a hypertext link, the user presses TAB to move the cursor to the reference point, then presses ENTER. After the user has read the text, a function key is available to return to the previous reference point.
  • Go to. The user can go to a specific topic in the book by entering the topic ID.
  • Print. Topics from the book may be printed. The user enters a from and through topic ID. Additional print format options can also be specified.
  • String search. The user can search for character strings in the book. A search option allows the specification of same case or ignore case string matching.
  • Ease of operation. BookReader has been designed to be easy to learn and use by the AS/400 display station user with a minimum of training required. The user may press HELP on any display for an explanation of the various functions and options available.
  • Multiple user support. BookReader may be used by any number of users concurrently.

Planning Information

Limitations: The following differences exist between using BookReader on the AS/400 and IBM Book Manager on a personal computer:

  • Display differences. Due to AS/400 display device limitations, there are some differences in appearance between on-line books displayed with BookReader on the AS/400 and those displayed with IBM BookManager® on a personal computer.
  • Partially Bold or Underlined words. BookReader will display the entire word in bold or underlined characters.
  • Graphic Text Characters. Many of the graphic text characters used by IBM BookManager® to display text figures are not available on AS/400 displays, and are substituted with similar characters when using BookReader.
  • Graphic Images. Due to hardware limitations, BookReader cannot display graphic images contained in on-line books. (Most charts and tables in on-line books are created with graphic text characters and can be displayed.)
  • Feature Differences. The following IBM BookManager® features are not supported by AS/400 BookReader:
  • Multiple book searches
  • "Fuzzy" search matching
